In what is becoming a biennial ritual, congress extended the popular IRA charitable rollover, a wonderful giving opportunity, through December 31, 2013. The charitable IRA rollover, or qualified charitable distribution (QCD), is a special provision allowing certain donors to exclude from taxable income -- and count toward their required minimum distribution -- certain transfers of Individual Retirement Account (IRA) assets that are made directly to public charities.
In summary, if you are 70½ or older, you may transfer up to $100,000 tax-free, directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization such as PACE. The IRS will treat the amount of the cash gift as if you had made a direct rollover to charity and you can then avoid federal tax on the amount of the gift.
What are the requirements and restrictions for making this gift?
